Palgon Tso Lake


It is also called Tsomo Angla Renbo, which means ‘the swan lake’ in Tibetan. It is located within the boundary of Rutok County and is a famous international lake, situated at the border of China and Nepal.

It is also a famous holy scenic spot in the west of Tibet. The surface of the lake has an altitude of 4242 meters. The total area of the lake covers 604 square kilometers. The lake formed in long and narrow shape with a wide-opened coverage on the surface of water on both sides and a rivertunnel-shaped of water in the middle part. It is about 150 km long from east to the west and 2-5 km wide; the narrowest part being only 5 meters. The main part of the lake is 110 km from east to west. There are more than ten islands in the lake and they are the paradise for all kinds of birds. That is why it is called ‘the birds lake’.
