Yuantong Temple

Yuantong Temple is at the foot of Yuantong Hill in the northern part of Kunming. With a history of more than 1,200 years, Yuantong Temple is the grandest as well as the most important Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province.

It was originally built during the Tang Dynasty, after two restorations and expansions in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the temple took on its present appearance, with covered corridors, bridges and grand halls. Differing from most other temples that were built with an ascending entrance, visitors enter the Yuantong Temple from above. The temple's great hall is at the lowest point of the temple. The temple's layout, along with the Buddhist scriptures inside, blends the Yuan and Ming styles.
