Most of travelers would be immerged in the picturesque villages and strongly impressed by the styles of local houses when they are first time traveling to Kham. As the diverse of the spectacular landscapes, the countryside views here are also varied from the different terrains, some village houses are white whereas some are brown; some are favored the inherent color whereas some of doors and windows are painted in black; some are constructed by stones whereas some are made of woods, and even lots of black yak-tailed tents. From geographically, Kham area straddles over the massive Hengduan Mountain ranges at the southeast edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, grand rivers of Yangtze, Yarlung and Dadu plus thousands of tributaries run through the region, which splits this territory into the complex landforms with the different sizes, altitudes and climates. High mountains, valleys, plains, grasslands and forest zones are therefore coexisted. Tribes of Khampa Tibetans are scattered in such diversified land, smart them practically know to build their houses by selecting appropriate construction materials to cope with the local topographic conditions, which hence present the various structures, layouts and functions, sometimes even are distinguished from adjacent villages. The tour will take on those stunning parts with the amazing natural scenes and idyllic images. It indeed could not cover all villages in Kham, however, the tour is well combined the essential sights which could get an in-depth experiences to look into the Khampa cultures, lifestyles and traditions.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival Chengdu & City Sightseeing

Upon arrive at Chengdu and transfer to your hotel. Get refreshment in the hotel, we step out for the Wide and Narrow alleys (Kuan Zhai Xiangzi), two ancient streets preserved from the old architectures in Ming and Qing dynasties in Chengdu. Day 02: Danba Countryside (B)

Day 03: Danba Villages Walk (B)

Wake up early morning, view the possibly sunrise of Mt. Modor. Day 04: Tawu & Tibetan Villages (B)

Leave for Tawu by passing through the stunning gorge and valley. On the route, visit Geda Shambaling Monastery. Day 05: Gantze (B)

Pass through the picturesque farming Tibetan villages, the road extends towards Gantze town along with the green or golden barley fields. Up to the hillside for visiting Gantze Monastery, the region’s largest lamasery. Day 06: Xinlong through Yarlung Valley (B)

The road follows the east bank of the Yarlung downstream to cross the deep and densely forested Yarlung gorge, the sentinel snow peak of Kawalungring (5,992m) lies to the east. Day 07: Litang (B)

Take the trail into deep Yarlung valley, the scenes change from alpine landscapes to the verdant broad grasslands are carpeted in edelweiss, gentian and the nomadic black yak tents. Day 08: Litang to Daocheng (B)

The road ascends to Haizi Pass (4,685m), a wild highland containing the remnants of the oldest glaciers on Qinghai-Tibet plateau. As the main road descends to the pastureland, we will pass by a tiny town of Sumdo, a fascinated sight for the gorgeous red grassy meadow in autumn. Visit a monastery here for an interesting image that the voluntary birds’ feeding by monks since 1990s, hundreds of Tibetan-eared pheasants roost nearby trees fly to eat food every morning and dusk. Day 09: Yading Nature Reserve Sightseeing (B)

Takes approximately 2 hours drive to Yading Nature Reserve this morning, the countryside scenery en route is very charming. At Yading, take a horse-riding to Tsongu Monastery, see the scenery of sacred peak Chenrezi. From here trekking up to Drolma-la tso (Pearl Lake) or ride a horse about 15 minutes, where can get the best view for Chenrezi. Day 10: Yading Nature Reserve Sightseeing (B)

Have a beautiful sunrise view at Tsongu Monastery, then keep riding horse to Luorong Pasture. It is the best location to pilgrim the three scared peaks, with Chenrezi (6,032m) lies to the north, Jampeyang (5,958m) to the south, and Chenadorje (5,955m) to the east. Day 11: Drive to Yajiang (B)

Day 12: Mt. Gongga scenic area (B)

The road gradually ascends to a 4,412m pass through the luxuriant forest along the downstream of Yarlung River, the stunning distant view of the peak of Mt. Minyar Gangka (7,556m) could be visible at the pass. Later enters into the lesser-visited hinterland of Mt. Day 13: Mt. Gongga scenic area & Drive to Kangding (B)

At the pass of 4,550m, get the nearest and also an excellent view point for the panorama of Mt. Gongga. There are more than 20 peaks over 6,000 meters and some 45 glaciers around this mighty peak. Then the road ascends to another pass at 4,568m while Mt. Gongga comes again in sight. Here is one of the best view points to see the west slope of Minyak Gongga Mountain. Some beautiful and breathtaking travertine ponds and sinter flat unfold on the way. Day 14: Drive back to Chengdu (B)

Take the scenic drive to back Chengdu.

Day 15: Chengdu Departure (B)
